The Bible
book of faith
There are 66 books in our Protestant Bible.... thirty-nine in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament.

Testament refers to the covenant or promises which God made with his people.  The Old Testament contains many different kind of writings.  The Law of Moses, history of the Israelite people, songs and poetry, wisdom writings and the words of the prophets are all part of the Old Testament.  The New Testament tells about Jesus and early Christianity.  The first four books tell us about Jesus. We call them the Gospels--- the Good News that God has saved us from our sin.  Matthew, Mark, Luke and John each tell us about the life of Christ.  The Acts of the Apostles is the book which tell us about the formation of the Christian Church and how the disciples spread the Gospel.  Then there are the letters (epistles) to the early Christians from Paul, John, Peter and others to these early churchs. Revelations is the last book of the Bible and focuses on the final times.

Knowing the author, the time in history, and the context of a book helps us to understand what we are reading.
